Trixie bet calculator
A Trixie bet is 4 bets on 3 selections: 3 doubles and 1 treble. You need at least 2 winners for a return. A £1 Trixie costs £4.
What is a Trixie bet?
A Trixie bet is a multiple bet on three selections in different events. It's made of four bets: three doubles and one treble. There are no singles, so one winner on its own pays nothing.
People often use it for three horses they fancy on the same card, or three football results on the same weekend. Each selection needs to be in a different event, because bookmakers won't let you combine results that depend on each other.
| Bet | How many |
|---|---|
| Doubles | 3 |
| Treble | 1 |
| Total | 4 bets |
How many winners does a Trixie need?
A Trixie has no singles, so you need at least 2 winners for a return. Each extra winner switches on more bets. This table shows which bets pay for each number of winners.
| Winners | Bets that pay | Out of 4 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nothing | 0 |
| 2 | 1 double | 1 |
| 3 | 3 doubles, 1 treble | 4 |
Trixie worked example
Here's a £1 win Trixie with all 3 selections priced at 3/1. The total stake is £4.00. The table shows what comes back for each number of winners.
| Winners | Return | Profit |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | £0.00 | -£4.00 |
| 1 | £0.00 | -£4.00 |
| 2 | £16.00 | £12.00 |
| 3 | £112.00 | £108.00 |
Each way, the same bet costs £8.00. If all 3 selections place but none win, with place terms of 1/5 odds, the place part returns £11.78, a profit of £3.78.

Trixie or Patent?
A Patent is a Trixie with three singles added, so it's seven bets instead of four. The singles mean one winner gets you something back. The Trixie is cheaper but needs two winners before anything comes back.
If you're confident at least two of your three will win, the Trixie puts more of your money into the doubles and treble. If you want cover for a single winner, the Patent is the safer shape.
When a Trixie suits you
- Three selections you rate, with a small total stake.
- Getting paid on two winners out of three, which a straight treble wouldn't do.
Watch out for
- One winner returns nothing.
- Each way doubles the cost, from 4 bets to 8.
