Both teams to score (BTTS) explained

What BTTS means, how BTTS and win works, and how to turn expected goals into a fair price so you can tell whether the odds are any good.

The short answer

Both teams to score (BTTS) is a bet on whether both sides score at least once. BTTS yes wins on 1-1, 2-1 or 3-2. BTTS no wins if either team fails to score, including 0-0 and 2-0. The result doesn't matter, only whether each team scores.

How BTTS is settled

  • BTTS yes wins if both teams score at least one goal each.
  • BTTS no wins if one or both teams fail to score.
  • Own goals count for the team credited with the goal.
  • Most bookmakers settle on 90 minutes plus injury time, not extra time or penalties.

BTTS no0-0, 1-0, 3-01-1, 2-1

Combinations pay more because more has to go right. Like bet builders, the parts are linked, so the price isn't simply the two prices multiplied.

What a fair BTTS price looks like

If you know roughly how many goals each team is expected to score, you can estimate the chance that both score. This table uses a standard goals model that treats each team's scoring as independent. Real matches aren't quite that tidy, so use it as a guide.

Expected goals for each team, and the chance both score
Home expected goalsAway expected goalsChance both scoreFair odds
0.80.624.8%4.02
1.20.941.5%2.41
1.51.151.8%1.93
1.81.360.7%1.65
2.21.671.0%1.41

If a bookmaker offers BTTS yes at a bigger price than the fair odds in the right row, that's a sign of value, as long as your goal estimates are sound.

BTTS in accas and bet builders

BTTS legs are popular in accumulators because the odds look modest and safe. They're still close to a coin flip in many matches, and every leg you add multiplies the chance of a miss. Our acca guide shows how quickly the odds of landing drop.
