Football accumulator tips: 7 rules for better accas

Seven rules that make any weekend's acca better, rather than this week's picks: fewer legs, better prices, and knowing what the bookmaker's margin does to your chances.

The short answer

Three football accumulator tips matter most. Keep accas short, shop around for the best price on every leg, and avoid stacking short favourites. Each extra leg adds the bookmaker's margin again, so a ten leg acca works like a lottery ticket. If you want some cover, a system bet like a Yankee pays out with fewer winners.

1. Keep a football accumulator to four or five legs

Every leg multiplies the odds, and the chance of a miss. This table uses legs at 1.50 each, a typical short price, with a 5% margin on each.

Four or five legs keep the odds interesting without the margin running away.

2. Shop for the best price on every leg

A small improvement on each leg compounds across the acca. Five legs each a tick bigger can add a lot to the return. Compare prices before you place it.

3. Short favourites add little and still lose

A 1/5 shot adds little to the odds but still loses one time in six or so. Short favourites are where accas most often fail for the least reward.

4. Mix in markets you understand

Both teams to score and goals markets can be easier to judge than the result. Stick to markets you can price yourself, so you know when the odds look generous.

5. Use acca insurance carefully

Acca insurance usually refunds your stake as a free bet if one leg lets you down. A free bet isn't cash, and the terms often set minimum legs and odds. It adds a bit of value, but don't pick extra legs just to qualify.

6. Use a Yankee or Lucky 15 for cover

A Yankee covers four picks with 11 bets, so two winners still return something. A Lucky 15 adds singles too. They cost more, but they don't need every leg to win.

7. Treat accas as entertainment

Accas are popular because the potential returns look huge. Over time the compounding margin means they lose more than singles. Stake what you'd spend on a night out, not what you hope to win.

Questions people ask

How many legs should a football acca have?

Four or five is a sensible balance. Every extra leg multiplies the margin and the chance of a miss.

Are accumulators a good bet?

They're fun, but they lose more on average than singles, because the bookmaker's margin compounds with every leg.

What is acca insurance?

An offer that refunds your stake, usually as a free bet, if one leg of your acca loses. Terms such as minimum legs and odds apply.
